Green Mountain Campers
Green Mountain Campers was formed in 1962 and produced Green Mountain Traveler campers, trailers, and RV’s through the 1970’s.
Green Mountain Campers was formed when Bill Sykes, a serial entrepreneur, saw a new opportunity. His current business providing concrete flatwork was contracted to pour a concrete slab for a slide-in truck camper manufacturer. During the time spent doing ground prep, pouring, and finishing the concrete work, Bill observed the company’s production and output of slide-in campers. Never scared of a pivot, Bill saw the opportunity to enter the camper manufacturing industry and seized it, producing his first slide-in truck camper that week in the driveway of his Green Mountain, Colorado home. Green Mountain Campers was born.
Bill grew up in Southern Minnesota hunting, trapping, and fishing. As young adults Bill and his wife, Audrey, travelled the country by vehicle as competitive water skiers. In the early 1960’s Bill, Audrey, and their children relocated to Colorado and took full advantage of Colorado life, including more hunting, fishing, and water skiing, as well as snow skiing in the winters.
Bill drew upon his own background as an avid outdoorsman, traveler, and adventurer to improve upon existing camper designs. Bill understood the needs of of an intrepid individual on the go, and customers appreciated his attention to detail and craftsmanship.
Though Bill started Green Mountain Campers as a one man operation, the company grew quickly, eventually employing a manufacturing team of 30 people, including Audrey and each of their five children. While slide in campers still made up the majority of Green Mountain Campers’ production, they eventually expanded to offering pull behind trailers and class C motorhomes.
Desiring a personal and professional change in scenery, Bill moved his family and Green Mountain Campers to Northern Colorado in the mid 1970’s, settling in Berthoud, Colorado.
In the late 70’s Bill began to see a new opportunity in the manufacturing of camper shells. Using a simplified version of the manufacturing techniques that he and his team already possessed, Bill could offer a product that allowed customers to get the most out of their trucks at all times, from the jobsite, to the campsite, and beyond.
With a new focus came a new name, and Bill hatched the concept of S-Cargo Truck Caps. Playing on the French for snails, Bill determined a revised spelling incorporating the S from his own last name and the Cargo that customer’s would haul in their trucks. S-Cargo was a success and is now Northern Colorado’s number one source for truck caps, tonneau covers, roof racks, and auto accessories, piloted by Bill’s youngest son, Bill Jr., and his family.
